Druid Fox Chapter 29
Fox
Fox was stunned. Artie hadn’t called him Duncan. It had been over four hundred years since she’d called him by any name other than his Christian name.
He lay beside her with her head pillowed on his outstretched arm. Her hair splayed out around her head, strands partially covered her face and his shoulder. He watched her as she slept, peaceful and content.
She was so small next to him. His heart went out to her. He’d desired only to protect her for four centuries, only to love her. If he could free her, he would.
She’d saved him and given him purpose and true companionship. She was happier than she’d ever been, freer than he’d ever known her. Coming to Luke and joining the Druid pack was right for both of them.
Tomorrow, they’d rebuild the Ruiri, and the magic would be his to command as it had been in his youth. This time, when the winter solstice came, he might set her free. He watched her nap as time slipped by. When she opened her eyes, he smiled at her.
“Shall we go make some dinner?” he asked her.
She smiled back, and they rose, dressed, and headed for the kitchen and Fox’s guilty pleasure of playing with his food. Dinner passed with good company.
Everyone laughed and talked. Eli and Luke were looking forward to summer break for her.
Fox idly wondered how long it would be before she finally resigned from teaching at the local school. She was nearly fifty and still looked thirty. It wouldn’t be too long before she gave that up to protect herself. Thankfully, she would have the pack to help her transition.
“I have a bit of possible negative news. The vampires who requested sanctuary have gone radio silent. I lost contact with them after they responded to our requirement that they make their way here if their situation deteriorated. It doesn’t look good. If Elliot is involved, then becoming stronger is looking like a good option.”
Fox hated to dampen his friends’ mood. He’d waited all week with no further word from either of the two vampires.
“I know we aren’t ready to provide shelter or sanctuary yet, but I know I would have died without the pack’s help. Is there anything we can do?” Isabell asked.
“If either of them makes it to us, we’ll hear them out and offer them temporary refuge at the least. We have to be careful, and we can’t overextend ourselves. We have to be in a position of strength to truly help others,” Javier said.
“Javier’s right. We can’t save every shifter. We still don’t know exactly what Elliot’s goal is, either. It’s hard to prepare for an unknown enemy.” Eli said quietly, as if she knew the truth of her words even though her heart sided with her friend’s plea to help others.
“Tomorrow we’ll add another layer of protection and defense for the Druid pack and Draoithe. We just have to keep moving forward with our plans for the retreat and deal with what we can deal with,” Luke said.
“Elliot is a shadowy but very real evil. The leopardess who contacted me before has joined the pack in Nevada that the werewolves fled to. One of that pack was her lifemate. Perhaps we should discuss an alliance.” Artie spoke up.
Fox looked at Javier, then at Luke.
“Let’s table that for the time being. Everyone sleeps on it, and we’ll discuss it at the Council meeting tomorrow after the ceremony and the Run. I would hear the council’s thoughts on the matter of alliances and this proposed action specifically. Bring all aspects, both negative and positive, to the table tomorrow.”
Luke spoke the command, and everyone nodded.
Dinner ended. Isabell and Javier offered to clean the kitchen as Fox and Artie walked Eli and Luke out. All of them were quietly thinking as Luke had asked. Things weren’t perfect, but they had a plan.
Thank you for your support! Welcome to the dream… Sincerely, -OK
