Dear Reader,

The Draoithe Saga is known for its steamy paranormal romance, magical realism, and immersive urban fantasy. However, tucked within this sprawling dream world are exclusive standalone tales, which might not be exactly paranormal romance. One is a deeply intimate and poignant flash fiction tale called The Last Train Whistle, which is part of the LARKS North Collection.

The story drops readers right into the echoing, chaotic vastness of a bustling train station, serving as a cruel soundtrack to the agonizing separation of Kyle and Vivian. Vivian, standing out against the mundane crowd in her vibrant emerald coat, is a woman of quiet strength who is leaving the Willow Creek territory to pursue a scholarship. Kyle is a wolf shifter whose life is rooted in his territory and his duties. Together, they represent a bittersweet clash of paths: a wolf who must stay to patrol, and a raven meant to fly free.

What makes this short story so heartbreaking is its grounded reality. The couple knew from the beginning that their whirlwind summer love carried an expiration date of autumn’s end. Instead of making impossible vows across continents or asking her to throw away her ambitions, Kyle selflessly must let her go. He recognizes that true love should elevate, not chain, and refuses to cage a bird meant to soar.

Their last moments are captured with raw, palpable emotion. They share a tender kiss built not on passion, but on desperation and a silent apology for the pain of parting. Through unshed tears, Vivian promises to make him proud, while Kyle urges her to chase her dreams, assuring her she will always have his heart.

When the train departs, Vivian doesn’t look back. Left behind in the cold, Kyle is anchored only by a smooth river stone from their first picnic—a stark contrast to the burning ache in his chest. The tale concludes with a haunting question: Could a shifter live without his heart after the last train whistle faded into deafening silence? It echoes the familiar exploration of the dangers of loneliness hidden in an immortal world.

Fun Fact: I actually created “The Last Train Whistle” as a seriously poor quality amateur short film before it was a published story, and it is available to watch on YouTube!

Thread Quote Card

Thread, the entry point into the world of the dream.

Unraveling chaos with each tattered thread

A thousand years ago, chaos escaped into the dream. By 2016, shadowy evil forces using madness were wreaking havoc on the balance of magic and erasing necessary parts of an ancient prophecy. In danger of losing its magic, the dream attempts to use broken pieces and replacement parts to weave a new tapestry. Choosing the right building blocks isn’t easy.

In this exhilarating prequel tale, meet Luke and Eli, two characters with fascinating pasts and complicated secrets, before they become the king and queen the dream needs them to be. Luke Mendez is a retired military man. Having anxiety, he spies the beautiful girl next door, but then struggles to introduce himself. Eli Miller, the high school history teacher, worked tirelessly for years to break free from a terrible relationship. She moved to Tyler to start over.

Thread is the story of a lonely direwolf shifter and a lone tiger shifter in a time before the two of them meet each other. It sets the stage for A Pack Forms, an enthralling urban fantasy with a paranormal romance tale in the epic Draoithe Saga by Ophelia Kee. If you enjoy the story before the story, Thread is your free introduction to a new series.

Welcome to the dream…

Behind the Scenes

A tiger and house renovations

The house renovations continue and are getting in my way. The bathroom is done, the vapor barrier is done, the new floors look fantastic. But the kitchen is, well, it doesn’t exist. Only the stove and refrigerator sit in the space where aging cupboards used to be. The range hood and dishwasher are on the porch. It is what it is, and I can’t complain. The worst will be finished before summer comes, and I can once again hop on a bullet train to zip around completing tasks in the dream.

I have kept up with posting on Substack, and I hope you are checking out the improved quality video book chapters on Saturdays. It has inspired me to craft a few more and perhaps to recreate the video book for The Last Train Whistle, which was my first ever, and mostly failed attempt to pursue adult-style picture books. Let me know your thoughts on it.
